Wednesday, 11 February 2009 |
Next week the KC chapter of ASEM will be having a general meeting on Tuesday, February 17th, from 6:00-7:00 pm. We will be meeting at the Edwards Campus in room 155 of Regnier Hall. The meeting will feature a guest speaker, Terry Sullivan, who will give a presentation based upon his EMGT field project entitled "The Laws of Documentation - Engineering Document Control for Telecommunication Systems." Here is the abstract from Mr. Sullivan's field project:
"The purpose of this field project is to create a documentation system that allows co-workers at a telecommunication company to store files on a shared LAN and retrieve that information quickly, easily and confidently when needed. A dictionary provides a good illustration of the laws of documentation that must be applied to a working documentation system. A solution for storing project-specific, site-specific, product-specific information as well as inter-company documents such as request for proposals, quotes and scopes of work is developed."
Mr. Sullivan is also a new addition to KU's EMGT program as an adjunct professor. So come on by and meet one of the new faculty! There will also be a short business meeting at the conclusion of the general meeting. |

ASEM/ASQ February Meeting Announcement |
|
|
|
|
Thursday, 07 February 2008 |
The next ASEM Meeting will be a joint meeting with ASQ. Betsi DeFrates of John Deere will be the speaker.
Date: Saturday, February 16, 2008 Six Sigma Topic: Applying Quality Tools to Transactional Processes Presenter: Betsi DeFrates of John Deere Registration Info: http://www.asq1301.org/
Synopsis of Presentation:
The field of quality has historically been developed and applied within the context of manufacturing. The physically tangible environment, the controllability of factors and the high volume of repeatable activities makes the factory floor an ideal environment for applying quality statistical methods. The presence of "real money" in the form of Raw and WIP inventory, as well as in the poor quality consequences of scrap and warranty, have kept businesses focusing their quality efforts first and foremost in their manufacturing processes.
Applying quality tools and methods in processes outside manufacturing, often referred as "transactional processes", has been gaining focus in recent years. This can at first be challenging due to the significantly different conditions and manner in which work occurs. This has led many to conclude that quality tools and methods are less relevant and applicable outside the factory floor.
The key to effectively improving transactional processes using quality/six sigma methods lies in a higher level of abstraction. Understanding both the processes and the quality tools and methods at a level of abstraction that is one level removed from the tangible application will enable the quality practitioner to see the "base logic" of how quality fits in the transactional environment. The focus of this workshop will be on revealing and understanding that higher level of abstraction
Speaker Information:
Betsi DeFrates has spent the last 18 years with John Deere in a variety of positions involved in developing and deploying quality and six sigma programs in their health care, corporate and equipment divisions. Her experience ranges from transactional and manufacturing process improvement, to strategic & operations planning, to developing and teaching classes in the John Deere Six Sigma course curriculum.
Betsi is a Senior Member of ASQ, is an ASQ-Certified Six Sigma Black Belt and a John Deere- Certified Master Black Belt. |

Meeting Minutes from 1/16/2008 Board meeting |

Below are the meeting minutes from the 1/16/2008 meeting. We had the meeting right after the joint meeting with AlChE. - 2008 Officers: Travis is the new president. Arthur is the new vice-president. Secretary/Treasurer duty is now shared among Phil, Arthu, and Alysen.
- General Meeting in Feb, March, and April: The Feb. meeting will be on the 16th as a joint presentation sponsored by ASQ. The presentation topic has not been confirmed yet. Alysen will get the details from her contact in ASQ. The March meeting is still open, and Travis will contact herb for potential presenters. The April meeting will be our usual Spring Workshop (see below).
- Check bank balance: Arthur will check the checking account balance and report back to the group. There are some reimbursements that need to be processed.
- Spring Management Worksho: We are tentatively looking at 4/19, and mostly likely hold it at Edwards Campus again. We will need to contact Prof. Chick Keller and Prof. Tom Bowlin see if they can present. We want to find a third, "outside" presenter, as well.
- JEC Meeting: Phil and/or Alysen will attend the meeting on 1/28. This usually occur on the fourth Monday of each month if anyone else is interested in attending.
- Shirts: Alysen will request current information from the vendor that we have used in the past. We are considering a long sleeved, light denim shirt embroidered with the ASEM logo. Once we get the setup and per shirt costs, we can decide on quantities.
- Website info: Nothing new to report.
New businesses: - Tuesday, February 19, is "Engineering Week" It will be held at the downtown Marriot. Herb will have a booth there for EMGT.
- Travis will look into whether a Lawrence location would make sense for a general meeting. There are a handful of undergrad EMGT classes. If there is enough interest, perhaps we could do the March meeting here. Travis will meet with Herb to discuss this and other EMGT/ASEM collaboration.
